FIR Against Tejashwi Yadav in Maharashtra Over Alleged Defamatory Remarks on PM Modi

Gadchiroli: A major political storm erupted on Friday after the Maharashtra Police registered an FIR against former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for allegedly making defamatory and socially divisive remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media.

The case was filed at Gadchiroli Police Station following a written complaint submitted by BJP MLA Milind Ramji Narote, who represents the Gadchiroli constituency.

According to Narote, several BJP workers flagged posts from Yadav’s official X (formerly Twitter) account (@yadavtejashwi), in which he allegedly called the Prime Minister a “liar” and accused him of repeatedly making false promises. One of the posts reportedly included a mocking song, with lyrics claiming that Modi “lies morning and evening.”

Narote told police that he personally verified the posts before filing the complaint, stating that such remarks were not only defamatory but also socially divisive. “This propaganda is designed to create bitterness in society and disturb communal harmony. It has hurt the sentiments of law-abiding citizens,” Narote said. He further accused Yadav of habitually making similar statements on digital platforms, calling the conduct a criminal pattern rather than an isolated incident.

The complaint included screenshots of the alleged posts, which were attached as evidence. Following the submission, police booked Yadav under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The charges include:

  • Section 196(1)(a): Use of words, signs, or digital communication to promote hatred or ill-will.
  • Section 196(1)(b): Acts prejudicial to public harmony.
  • Section 356(2): Derogatory statements against the government intended to incite public mischief.
  • Section 356(3): Repeated instances of offensive commentary.
  • Sections 352 & 353(2): Attempts to spread disharmony through speech, writing, or digital media.
