New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has strongly condemned the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case against party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in connection with the National Herald case, calling it “baseless” and “politically motivated.”

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Gehlot alleged that the case had been deliberately filed to silence the opposition and intimidate those who raise uncomfortable questions. “ED case has been filed against Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi deliberately, which has no meaning… False cases have been made, not even a rupee was transacted,” he asserted.

Gehlot claimed that the ruling establishment was particularly irked by Rahul Gandhi’s persistent questioning around sensitive issues, especially “Operation Sindoor”—a subject Gehlot said the public is eager to understand. “They were not comfortable with Rahul Gandhi asking questions on Operation Sindoor, but he asked the same question, which is in the minds of the public,” he said.

Highlighting the democratic duty of the opposition, the Congress veteran remarked, “It is the responsibility of the opposition to raise the questions of the public, this is democracy…”

The ED’s investigation into the National Herald case, which revolves around the acquisition of the Associated Journals Ltd. (AJL) by Young Indian—a company in which both Gandhi leaders are major stakeholders—has been under heavy criticism from the Congress, which has consistently called it a “vendetta” move by the Centre.
