Agartala: Biplab Kumar Deb, former chief minister of Tripura and current sitting Rajya Sabha MP has been fielded by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the candidate from the Tripura West, Lok Sabha seat.

With the announcement of his candidature by the party when it announced the first list of 195 candidates, Biplab will now replace Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment and a firebrand party leader from Tripura, Pratima Bhowmik.

Biplab, who adorns different feathers in his cap, has also been the party in-charge in Haryana. He however has kept his popularity intact in his home state which became apparent after he was accorded a grand welcome by his party workers and followers at the Agartala’s MBB airport on his maiden visit to the state after the announcement of party candidates. BJP supporters and Deb’s followers greeted him with flower bouquets, traditional ‘Rishas’ and with the chants of his name.

Talking to reporters at the party headquarters in Agartala, Deb said that he got the identity as chief minister, Rajya Sabha MP and now being named as the nominee of the party from the Tripura West Lok Sabha constituency was all because of the people of the state. He said when he came to the state in 2015, the BJP had a team which was small with no MLA or big leaders.

However, he said that he was lucky to have been blessed by the people of the state to form the government way back in 2018 when the saffron party first came to power by dethroning the CPI (M) rule for 25 years in power. Making an emotional appeal, he expressed hope that the people of the state will once again vote for him to win from his parliamentary seat.

Deb expressed gratitude to senior BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him an opportunity to contest from Tripura West LS seat. He is currently a Rajya Sabha member and emphasized the importance of his supporters as the main source of strength for him. The BJP has replaced Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Pratima Bhowmik, who is currently the sitting MP from Tripura West seat.

Tripura has two Lok Sabha seats – East Tripura and West Tripura constituency, and both are in control of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJP is yet to announce its candidate for the Schedule Tribe reserved East Tripura constituency in Tripura from where Rebati Tripura is the sitting MP.
