The Election Commission of India took action against BJP leader Dilip Ghosh and Congress’ Supriya Shrinate on Monday, censuring them for making derogatory remarks that undermined the dignity of women. The Commission found their statements to be a violation of the Model Code of Conduct, constituting a low-level personal attack.

Both Ghosh and Shrinate have been warned to exercise caution in their public utterances during the Model Code of Conduct period. Additionally, the Commission announced that their election-related communications would undergo special and additional monitoring starting Monday.

In a notice issued to both politicians, the Election Commission emphasized the need for sensitivity and adherence to guidelines while communicating in the public domain. Copies of the warning notice or censure were also sent to their respective party chiefs, urging them to sensitize their functionaries against making derogatory comments and violating model code guidelines.

The controversy surrounding Shrinate stemmed from a controversial comment posted on her social media accounts targeting Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, who is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls as a BJP candidate from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. Shrinate subsequently removed the contentious remarks from all her social media platforms, asserting that they were not posted by her but by someone else with access to her accounts.

Meanwhile, Dilip Ghosh faced backlash after a video surfaced showing him mocking the family background of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. Following widespread criticism, Ghosh issued an apology for his contentious remarks against the Chief Minister of West Bengal.
