Bhubaneswar: In his opening remarks at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Odisha on Thursday, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized the integral role of the Indian diaspora in contributing to the nation’s growth and development. The event, which saw a gathering of Indians from around the world, was described by Jaishankar as “like a family reunion,” where the diaspora could witness firsthand the progress and transformation taking place in India.
Jaishankar began by expressing the significance of the diaspora, stating, “This function is like a family reunion; Indians living abroad are able to see and experience for themselves the progress and development taking place in their country.” He added that Indians abroad also take great pride in the accomplishments of their fellow countrymen and women globally.
Further, Jaishankar highlighted the vital contributions of the diaspora in various sectors such as technology, trade, and investment. He noted, “In a globalized era, the diaspora only becomes more important with each passing year. Whether it is technology, best practices, or resources, the two-way flows you enable are invaluable.”
He also drew attention to the people-centric changes happening in India, which benefit not only citizens within the country but also those abroad. The government’s efforts to enhance the ease of doing business, improve connectivity and travel, and implement digital technologies for diaspora welfare were highlighted. Jaishankar pointed to significant improvements in consular services, such as simplified passport issuance and renewal processes, increased welfare measures, and more effective grievance platforms.
Jaishankar reassured the diaspora, saying, “In times of difficulties, you can be confident that the Modi Sarkar has your back.” He concluded by emphasizing how the strong bond between India and its global citizens will continue to foster opportunities for both the diaspora and the nation.
