Mumbai: Doctors across Mumbai have raised concerns as new symptoms like common fever, cough is being noticed in patients suffering from dengue. Doctors have advised patients to get tested for dengue with Covid-19 if they experience any such symptoms.
Normally in the rainy season, cases of dengue are noticed, patients suffer from fever and the white blood cells (WBC) and platelets decrease. Decreased neutrophils in the blood are the main symptoms of dengue. However, the symptoms of cold, fever and cough have now increased in many patients, said Dr Parthiv Sanghvi, secretary of the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
“Mosquitoes are prevalent in Mumbai, so the rate of transmission is also higher. Also there is a high incidence of dengue. At present, the number of dengue cases is increasing. So, if a person is suffering a cold, fever, cough, these symptoms can be not only of Covid-19 but also can be of dengue. Therefore, it is necessary to test for dengue”, said Dr. Sanghvi.
Another doctor, Gautam Bhansali from Bombay Hospital has also confirmed the new symptoms found in patients suffering from dengue. He said dengue patients have increased in the Out Patient Department (OPD’s) in private hospitals.
Gautam Bhansali said that the number of patients increased by 10 per cent to 12 per cent more than the normal cases. Therefore, if a person has symptoms like cold, fever and cough, it may not only be corona infection but also dengue. Therefore, it is necessary to test for dengue with corona, he said.
Three out of every 10 dengue patients need to be hospitalised after patients complaining of shortness of breath. During monsoon, doctors should not only diagnose for Coronavirus, but also dengue in patients who are having difficulty in breathing”, said Dr. Mandar Kubal from Wockhardt, Mumbai Central.
In 2019, 920 dengue patients were found and three deaths have been reported. In 2020, that number dropped to 129 and three deaths. So far in 2021, 74 dengue cases have been reported. The corporation has claimed that only eight patients were diagnosed between July 1 and 11.
