As the Lok Sabha elections loom closer, Maharashtra’s political arena becomes a battleground with escalating tensions between the Shiv Sena-UBT alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a recent development, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray delivered a fiery address in Sangli, targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah indirectly, sparking a war of words between the two factions.

Thackeray’s speech in Sangli took a direct aim at Amit Shah, albeit through veiled references, particularly targeting Shah’s son, Jay Shah. Denying allegations that the alleged rift within Shiv Sena was due to familial considerations, Thackeray unleashed a scathing attack using Jay Shah’s name.

Thackeray drew parallels between Jay Shah’s appointment as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and accusations of nepotism within the BJP. He went on to suggest that India lost the World Cup final due to Jay Shah’s involvement, insinuating nepotistic practices within the BJP.

“People say that Shiv Sena broke because of my love for Aditya Thackeray. Really? What about you? Didn’t India lose the ICC ODI World Cup final because of Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah?” Thackeray’s rhetoric questioned, highlighting Jay Shah’s lack of cricketing credentials despite his prominent position.

This isn’t the first instance of Thackeray using Jay Shah’s name to critique the BJP. Previously, at a rally in Panvel, Thackeray had raised similar concerns about Jay Shah’s appointment to the BCCI, echoing sentiments echoed by other political leaders. Thackeray seized upon Amit Shah’s prior remarks on nepotism and dynastic politics to launch a counterattack, questioning the BJP’s own practices.

Amit Shah’s criticism of dynastic politics, particularly directed towards Uddhav Thackeray’s alleged ambitions for his son, Aditya Thackeray, provided Thackeray with ammunition for his rebuttal. Thackeray defended his son’s aspirations, asserting that leadership roles should be earned through electoral support, unlike Jay Shah’s perceived elevation within the BCCI hierarchy.
