In a statement that underscores his personal commitment to religious harmony, Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh announced that he has donated ₹1.11 lakh for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Singh, a former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, made this declaration during an interaction with reporters in the capital city of Bhopal.

Singh, known for his belief in Sanatana Dharma and his dedication to secular politics, stated, “I follow Sanatana Dharma, and I am a good Hindu.” He made it clear that while he is a devout Hindu, he believes in the separation of religion and politics. “However, the use of religion in elections is prohibited,” he added, reaffirming the importance of secular principles in the political arena.

The Congress leader shared details of his contribution to the Ram temple project, noting that he had donated ₹1.11 lakh. He revealed that he initially sent a cheque for the amount to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, intending it to be submitted to the temple trust. However, the Prime Minister returned the cheque, instructing Singh to submit it himself, which he duly did.

This statement by Digvijaya Singh comes shortly after a heated exchange with incumbent Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the latter’s performance of ‘Kanya Puja’ at his residence on the final day of Navratri. Singh had criticized Chouhan, referring to him as a ‘dramebaaz’ (one engaged in theatrics).

Chouhan, in response, defended the tradition of ‘Kanya Puja’ and questioned whether worshipping daughters could be deemed a “nautanki” (theatrics). He called on Congress to clarify its stance on the matter.

The context of these exchanges is the upcoming Madhya Pradesh state elections scheduled for November 17, 2023. The BJP, led by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, is seeking to retain power in the state, having come to power following the collapse of the Congress government in 2020. The election results will be revealed on December 3, and the political discourse continues to be heated as the state approaches its polling day.
