Mumbai: In a significant step towards modernising urban mobility, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the much-anticipated ‘Mumbai-1’ single mobility card will soon be launched, offering seamless access to all modes of public transport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The unified card will allow commuters to use suburban trains, Mumbai Metro, Monorail and city buses with just a single tap.
“This will revolutionise how Mumbai travels,” said Fadnavis at a joint press conference with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He confirmed that integration with the railway ticketing system is already underway and will be completed within a month. The ‘Mumbai-1’ card is part of the state government’s broader effort to offer a unified travel experience and reduce reliance on cash or multiple apps and tokens, thus making commuting smoother for lakhs of daily passengers.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, present at the event, announced a substantial upgrade to Mumbai’s suburban train network with the sanctioning of 238 new AC local trains. The additional trains will strengthen the current fleet, reduce overcrowding and improve comfort for daily travellers across the city’s Western, Central and Harbour lines. Vaishnaw also shared that railway infrastructure projects worth ₹1,73,804 crore are in progress across Maharashtra, representing an unprecedented scale of development. Of these, ₹17,000 crore-worth projects are specifically being implemented in Mumbai alone. Furthermore, ₹23,778 crore-worth of new railway projects have been approved in this year itself, marking a record-breaking pace of infrastructural growth.
During the event, CM Fadnavis also highlighted the approval of the Gondia-Ballarshah railway line in eastern Maharashtra, which he said would significantly enhance connectivity between Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. The Union government will bear ₹4,019 crore of the total cost of the project, demonstrating its strong focus on improving regional connectivity.
Another major announcement made by the Chief Minister was the launch of the ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Circuit Train Line’, which aims to promote tourism by taking passengers through historic forts and cultural landmarks associated with the Maratha warrior king.
