Delhi: Tension flared in parts of Old Delhi on Tuesday morning after a pre-dawn anti-encroachment operation by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) near the historic Turkman Gate area spiralled into violence, leaving at least five police personnel injured.
The operation, carried out in the early hours, targeted structures described by civic authorities as illegal constructions on land adjacent to the century-old Syed Faiz Elahi Mosque and a nearby graveyard. As demolition machinery moved in, sections of local residents gathered in protest, alleging that the action was unfair and insensitive to the religious site.
What began as verbal opposition soon escalated into chaos, with protesters reportedly breaking police barricades and pelting stones at officials and security personnel. In response, the police deployed tear gas and additional forces to disperse the crowd and prevent the situation from worsening.
Senior police officials said the drive was conducted in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court as part of a broader effort to reclaim encroached public land in the city. According to the police, the situation was brought under control through calibrated action, and normalcy was restored without further escalation.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range) Madhur Verma said that a small group of miscreants attempted to disrupt the operation. “Swift and proportionate steps were taken to ensure law and order, and the area was secured,” he said.
Following the clashes, security was tightened across Turkman Gate and adjoining localities. Police teams have begun scanning CCTV footage to identify those involved in the violence. Officials confirmed that cases will be registered against the stone pelters, and several individuals have already been detained for questioning.
The incident comes amid ongoing legal proceedings related to the site. Earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court issued notice on a plea filed by the mosque’s managing committee challenging the MCD’s move to clear the disputed land, adding a legal dimension to an already sensitive situation.
