Delhi: Delhi and the National Capital Region were placed under the most stringent anti-pollution restrictions on Saturday night after air quality deteriorated rapidly, pushing pollution levels into the hazardous ‘severe plus’ category within a matter of hours. Authorities moved swiftly to activate the highest stage of emergency response as smog thickened across the region.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage-IV of the Graded Action Response Plan (GRAP) after real-time monitoring showed a sharp spike in pollution levels. According to official data, the Air Quality Index climbed steeply through the evening, signalling a worsening situation driven by unfavourable weather conditions.
By late evening, pollution hotspots across the capital recorded alarming readings. Anand Vihar emerged as one of the worst-affected areas, shrouded in dense smog with AQI levels approaching the upper extreme of the scale. Iconic locations such as India Gate and Kartavya Path were also engulfed in a thick haze, severely reducing visibility and air quality.
Officials said the sudden escalation was largely due to sluggish wind speeds and a stagnant atmosphere that trapped pollutants close to the surface. These conditions prevented dispersion, allowing emissions from vehicles, construction dust and other sources to accumulate rapidly.
With Stage-IV restrictions now in force across Delhi-NCR, all construction and demolition work has been suspended in the capital. Operations of stone crushers, mining activities and related industrial units across the region have also been ordered to stop until further notice.
Transport curbs have been tightened significantly. The movement of older petrol and diesel four-wheelers has been restricted across Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar as part of efforts to cut vehicular emissions.
To limit public exposure, especially among children, schools have been instructed to switch to hybrid learning for students up to Class 5. Offices — both government and private — have been directed to operate with only half their workforce on-site, with the rest working from home under provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1986.
