The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted regular bail to Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar, who was lodged in Tihar Jail for his alleged involvement in the 2021 murder of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar. The decision comes nearly three years after the incident that shocked the sporting community.

Sushil Kumar, a two-time Olympic medalist, had previously been granted seven days of interim bail in July 2023 for knee surgery. However, he remained in judicial custody as the case progressed.

According to the charge sheet filed by the Delhi Police, Sushil Kumar and his associates allegedly assaulted Sagar Dhankar and two of his friends—Sonu and Amit Kumar—on the intervening night of May 4 and 5, 2021, at Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium. Sagar later succumbed to his injuries. A viral video had surfaced on social media purportedly showing Kumar and his associates attacking another individual with sticks.

The police investigation revealed that Sagar and his friends were kidnapped from different locations in Delhi and brought to the stadium, where the gate was locked, and security guards were removed. The 1,000-page charge sheet stated, “All the victims were surrounded, and all the accused beat them badly using lathis, daands, hockey sticks, and baseball bats for about 30 to 40 minutes.”

Further investigations exposed links between the case and organized crime. Police found that individuals from both camps of wrestlers were allegedly involved in the illegal occupation and extortion of disputed land. It was also revealed that some wrestlers had ties to notorious gangsters Kala Jathedi and Neeraj Bawania.
