Delhi Car Blast: DNA Confirms Dr. Umar Mohammad Nabi as Driver of Explosive-Laden Hyundai i20

Delhi: In a significant development in the Delhi car blast case, DNA tests have confirmed that Dr. Umar Mohammad Nabi drove the Hyundai i20 that exploded near the Red Fort, media reports citing sources revealed. Investigators have also linked Dr. Nabi’s employment at Al-Falah Medical College to the incident.

According to NDTV, Dr. Nabi’s DNA was matched with that of his mother, as well as samples recovered from his bones, teeth, and clothing at the blast site. ANI reported that the suicide bomber’s leg was found trapped between the steering wheel and the accelerator, as per Delhi Police.

Reports further indicate that Dr. Nabi had stayed at a mosque on Asaf Ali Road near Ramlila Maidan before carrying out the attack. CCTV footage reportedly captured him driving the car into the mosque’s parking lot at 3:19 pm on Monday, November 10, nearly three hours before the explosion. Intelligence agencies are also examining his mobile phone data and signal history, News18 reported.

The blast occurred at 6:52 pm on Monday, November 10, outside Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 20. Reports indicate that Dr. Nabi acquired the Hyundai i20 from a dealer in Faridabad on October 29 and completed a Pollution Under Control (PUC) test on the same day.

Earlier reports suggested that the car had been parked inside Al-Falah Medical College’s campus for almost 11 days before the attack. NDTV claimed that Dr. Nabi drove the vehicle out of the college on the day of the blast. However, Faridabad Police later refuted these claims, denying that the car was kept at the college premises for 11 days.

The medical college came under the spotlight this week after police arrested two doctors—Dr. Mujammil Shakeel and Adeel Ahmad Rather—hours before the blast, in connection with the seizure of 2,900 kg of explosives. Meanwhile, Al-Falah University has denied any involvement in the Delhi car blast.
