The saga around the notorious Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar continues with the latest development centering around the auction of four ‘benami’ properties linked to the absconding terrorist-don. These properties, situated in the Mumbake village of Ratnagiri district, where Dawood and his family spent their early years, are slated for auction today under various acts including SAFEMA, NDPS Act, and the Prohibition of Benami Property Transaction Act.

Spanning a total of 21,275 sq. meters, these properties hold historical significance as the childhood grounds of Dawood and his siblings before they moved to Mumbai in the late 1970s. The auction will feature two farmhouse plots and two smaller plots, categorized as ‘agricultural land’ and currently abandoned.

The auction itself is a multi-mode event, allowing for e-auction, public auction, or sealed tenders. The government has set a reserve price of approximately Rs 19 lakh for these properties, emphasizing that they will be sold ‘as is where is’ and ‘as is what is’. Prospective buyers are advised to conduct their own due diligence regarding encumbrances, title deeds, and other relevant factors before participating in the auction.

This isn’t the first time properties linked to Dawood have hit the auction block. In the past decade, several properties, including Hotel Raunak Afroz, Shabnam Guest House, and parts of the Damarwala building in Nagpada, have been auctioned off, fetching significant sums for the government. However, not all properties have found buyers, with one plot in Lote village remaining unsold previously.

Leading up to today’s auction, local interest in the properties surged, with both locals and outsiders visiting the site. One of the plots, enclosed by a boundary wall adorned with the symbol of a Crescent Moon and Star, stood neglected and overgrown.

The auction comes amidst previous speculations about Dawood’s health. In December 2023, reports emerged suggesting his hospitalization due to alleged poisoning. However, D-Company members dismissed these reports as ‘fake’, asserting Dawood’s well-being. Currently residing in Karachi, Dawood remains a prime figure on India’s most-wanted list, implicated in various crime and terror activities, including the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts.

This auction marks another chapter in the ongoing pursuit of justice and handling of assets linked to one of India’s most elusive and notorious figures.
