Cyclone Yaas weaken into Depression says IMD; Bihar on high alert as cyclone to hit the state this afternoon

Cyclone Yaas has further weakened after entering the Chotanagpur plateau area in Jharkhand. Weather department presently mentioned that the Cyclone is now slowly progressing northwards and will gradually weaken into a depression. Almost 21 districts of the state are witnessing intermittent rainfall due to the cyclonic effect while gusty winds are blowing at a speed of 20-30 km per hour in the south-western parts of the state. AIR Correspondent reports that Few mud-houses in East Singhbhum, Saraikela-Kharsawan districts have been destroyed due to the effect of Cyclone Yaas, while two people lost their lives as a house fell down in state capital Ranchi due to Cyclone.

Water level in Kharkhai river is crossing above the danger mark, and Rajnagar block in Saraikela Kharsawan district has been totally cut-off from the rest of the district. Water level of Swarnarekha river is also flowing above the danger mark in East Singbhum district. District administration of East Singhbhum district have been continuously giving s to people living near the bottom of river banks to immediately shift to district administration’s shelter camp. Rescue and relief operations are being carried out for people shifted to makeshift shelter-homes by district administration.

Meanwhile Ranchi recorded highest rainfall of 151 millimetres in last 24 hours after a gap of 31 years in the month of May due to the cyclonic storm. Cyclone Yaas had entered Jharkhand yesterday late night. State Disaster Management department, local District administration, municipal corporations and NDRF teams are on work mode to restore power failures, clearing of road blockades and water logging at several places in the affected districts. Weather Department has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorm as the cyclone progresses towards Palamu, Garhwa and Latehar districts.

Bihar has been put on high amid the forecast that cyclone Yaas. According to Met department currently the Wind speed over the whole Bihar is in between 20-25km/hr and Gusting up to 30-35Km/hr. Meanwhile IMD has said that Cyclone Yaas is very likely to move further North-westwards and weaken gradually into a depression during next 12 hours.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has instructed all District Magistrates (DMs) to remain on high in view of cyclone . Mr Kumar said 22 teams of NDRF and SDRF have been deployed in districts adjoining Jharkhand and West Bengal to meet any eventuality. The effect of Yaas can be witnessed in districts of Katihar, Khagaria, Madhepura, Saharsa, Supaul, Nawada, Lakhisarai, Aurangabad, Patna, Bhojpur, Buxar, Vaishali.

An for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places was issued for the state. It has also ed people of the state to stay away from open spaces, trees to avoid getting struck by lightning. Met scientist said though widespread rainfall and thunderstorm is likely to cross the state by 29th of May, the impact of the cyclone will be more over the next two days with higher intensity in north – western parts of the state. The East Central Railways has cancelled 15 trains in view of cyclone.
