In a significant political development, Geeta Koda, the lone Member of Parliament representing the Congress party in Jharkhand, tendered her resignation and officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Ranchi today. Geeta Koda, who is the wife of former Chief Minister Madhu Koda, made this transition in the presence of state BJP chief Babulal Marandi.
Geeta Koda’s decision to switch parties comes as a blow to the Congress party, particularly ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sources indicate that her dissatisfaction with the Congress’s alliances in the state prompted her resignation, and she has reportedly communicated her decision to the party’s high command.
The BJP, which emerged victorious in 12 out of the 14 seats in Jharkhand during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, welcomes Geeta Koda’s move, further consolidating its position in the state. Babulal Marandi, while addressing the media, emphasized that there was no prospect of an alliance with the Congress in the foreseeable future, citing recent statements by leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal.
Marandi asserted, “The INDI alliance is merely a union of corrupt individuals who seek to shield themselves from scrutiny. However, their track record and intentions are evident to the public.”
Commenting on the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming elections, Marandi expressed confidence in replicating the party’s success from the previous polls. He noted that the BJP-led NDA alliance aims to secure victory in the remaining two seats in Jharkhand, building on its performance from the previous elections.
Regarding the recent arrest of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Chief Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case, Marandi attributed Soren’s predicament to his actions. Marandi suggested that Soren’s tenure as Chief Minister was marked by corruption and negligence, leading to his eventual downfall.
