New Delhi: The Congress Party on Saturday raised concerns over former US President Donald Trump’s claim that India had agreed to reduce tariffs under pressure from him. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh and other party leaders accused the Modi government of compromising Indian farmers’ and manufacturers’ interests and demanded transparency on the issue.

Taking to social media X (formerly Twitter), Jairam Ramesh questioned the government’s stance, especially in light of Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Washington for trade discussions.

“The Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is in Washington DC to talk trade with the Americans. Meanwhile, President Trump says this. What has the Modi Government agreed to? Are the interests of Indian farmers and of Indian manufacturing being compromised? The PM must take Parliament into confidence when it resumes on March 10th,” Ramesh posted.

The Congress also accused the BJP-led central government of compromising national interests to appease the US. “Trump says he exposed India. This is an insult to our country. He claims Modi reduced tariffs out of fear. Narendra Modi must clarify what compromises were made to please Trump. Was the nation’s honour put at stake?” the party wrote on X.
