New Delhi: Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has lashed out at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his controversial remarks against women, accusing him of WUOPTE — Wrong Use of Power to Target and Exploit — in the political arena.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday night, Gogoi termed Sarma’s statement, which alleged that women had to “compromise” for jobs under the Congress regime, as “disgraceful.”
“The allegation of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that women of Assam would compromise to secure a job is disgraceful,” Gogoi posted.
The Congress MP further slammed the CM for dragging such sensitive issues into electioneering:
“The fact that the chief minister makes this statement at a political rally during the ongoing panchayat elections marks a new low for the political discourse in Assam.”
Gogoi highlighted the respect Assamese women command and their contributions through history, saying,
“Assamese women are highly respected and empowered in the society. From the days of the freedom struggle to the present day, the women have done our society proud. The chief minister should be mature enough to apologise.”
The CM’s controversial remark was made during panchayat election rallies on April 28, where Sarma referenced a witness statement from the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission report on the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) exam scam of 2013–14. According to him, the statement mentioned that some women had “to adopt a wrong path” to secure jobs during the Congress rule.
The fallout was swift. On Thursday, the Assam Congress filed multiple police complaints against Sarma for his alleged derogatory comment. Police, however, have not registered FIRs yet.
