New Delhi: In a sharp rebuke to the Narendra Modi-led government, Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar on Thursday questioned the timing and motives behind the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, from the United States. Kumar argued that the BJP’s move was nothing more than a ploy to divert public attention from the government’s failure to deliver on its promises.
“Since the BJP has no achievement worth the name, it tries to divert public issues under one pretext or the other,” Kumar remarked, calling the extradition a distraction from the real issues facing the country. He particularly criticized the BJP for its handling of the Waqf Bill, questioning the government’s sincerity in claiming it would benefit poor Muslims. “Who will believe this, coming from a government that doesn’t let Muslims offer namaz on their own rooftops?” he asked.
The former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union president also took aim at the BJP’s rhetoric surrounding the abrogation of Article 370. “We all remember their promises after the abrogation of Article 370, with BJP leaders claiming that now people from Bihar and other parts of the country would be able to purchase land in Kashmir. Show me one person who has been able to buy property there since then,” he said.
