The Congress took disciplinary action against former Mumbai unit chief Sanjay Nirupam on Wednesday following his critical remarks against the party leadership amid seat-sharing negotiations with Maha Vikas Aghadi ally Shiv Sena (UBT) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Reports indicate that Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole announced the removal of Nirupam from the list of star campaigners as a consequence of his comments.

Nirupam’s outburst came after Shiv Sena (UBT) announced candidates for four out of six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai, including the Mumbai North West seat, which Nirupam had hoped to contest. He criticized the state Congress leadership for allegedly succumbing to pressure from Shiv Sena (UBT), warning that such capitulation would lead to the demise of the Congress.

The unilateral decision by Shiv Sena (UBT) to field candidates in Mumbai has unsettled the other Maha Vikas Aghadi allies, Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar). With the seat-sharing agreement still pending, tensions have risen among the coalition partners ahead of the Lok Sabha polls scheduled to commence on April 19 in Maharashtra.
