Congress Draws Red Line Before UP Polls: Wants Equal Seat-Sharing With SP, Signals Tough INDIA Bloc Negotiations

The Congress has made it clear that it intends to play a much stronger role in Uttar Pradesh politics ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, signalling that it will no longer accept a secondary position in any alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP). The move could reshape negotiations within the INDIA bloc as discussions over seat-sharing gather momentum.

Congress Wants Alliance On Equal Terms

The party’s new Uttar Pradesh in-charge, Rajendra Pal Gautam, has indicated that Congress is open to an alliance with the Samajwadi Party but only if both parties are treated as equal partners. His remarks reflect a shift in the Congress’ political strategy after years of contesting elections from a relatively weaker position in the state.

During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress contested only a limited number of seats under its alliance with the SP. However, party leaders now believe the political landscape has changed and that the party deserves a larger share in future electoral arrangements.

Preparations Already Underway

Congress has reportedly begun identifying nearly 170 Assembly constituencies where it believes it has a realistic chance of putting up a strong fight. Internal surveys and ground-level assessments are said to be helping the party evaluate its prospects across Uttar Pradesh.

Although party leaders are believed to be aiming to contest around 120 to 130 seats, preparing a larger list is seen as a strategy to strengthen its bargaining position during alliance talks.

Challenge For INDIA Bloc

The Congress’ tougher stand could complicate negotiations with the Samajwadi Party, which continues to be the principal opposition force in Uttar Pradesh. Political observers believe the SP may be reluctant to significantly increase Congress’ share of seats, setting the stage for difficult discussions before the elections.

The developments also indicate an emerging contest within the INDIA bloc over leadership and influence in India’s most politically significant state.

Focus On Expanding Social Support

Congress is also working to widen its voter base by strengthening its outreach among Dalits, minorities and upper-caste communities. The appointment of Rajendra Pal Gautam, a prominent Dalit leader, is being viewed as part of this broader electoral strategy.

The party is also relying on senior leaders from different social backgrounds to improve its presence across key regions of Uttar Pradesh before the Assembly polls.

Early Political Battle Before 2027

Political analysts believe Congress is attempting to change the perception that it is merely a junior ally in Uttar Pradesh. Encouraged by its improved performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party now wants greater political space and a stronger voice within the opposition alliance.

While it remains uncertain whether Congress will secure the seat-sharing formula it seeks, its latest stand makes one thing clear—the race for political leadership within the opposition camp has begun well before voters head to the polls in 2027.
