Patna: A political storm erupted on Friday after the Kerala unit of the Congress posted a controversial tweet that appeared to mock Bihar, triggering furious reactions from the BJP and its ally JDU.

The since-deleted tweet, made in the context of the new GST reforms, stated: “Bidis and Bihar start with B. Cannot be considered sin anymore.” The remark, juxtaposed with reduced GST rates on bidis and tobacco products, was immediately branded offensive by leaders across the spectrum.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhari denounced the post as an attack on the dignity of the state. “First, the insult to the revered mother of our honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, and now the insult to the entire Bihar. This is the true character of the Congress, which is repeatedly being exposed before the country,” he said.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla escalated the criticism, accusing the Congress of deliberate disrespect. “Congress crosses the line again. After abusing PM Narendra Modi ji’s mother, now compares Bihar with bidi! Does Tejashwi Yadav endorse this?” he asked, drawing RJD into the controversy.

Poonawalla further alleged a pattern of disdain for Bihar within the opposition bloc, saying, “From Revanth Reddy to DMK to Congress, their hatred for Bihar is evident.”

The uproar comes just months before Bihar heads into crucial elections, making the Congress post all the more explosive. Political observers note that the timing of the remark could further strain ties between the Congress and its INDIA bloc partners in the state.
