Cong ticks off Sena with a stern message, says it’s opposed to renaming cities

Mumbai: The Congress on Wednesday sent out a stern message to its dominant ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance partner the Shiv Sena categorically voicing its staunch opposition to renaming any city in the state. In a series of tweets Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Balasaheb Thorat argued that in order to maintain social harmony the Congress opposes any move to rename any city in the state. His statement comes against the backdrop of the Sena vocally articulating its intent to rename Aurangabad city as Sambhajinagar. It also indicates that all is not well between the Congress and Shiv Sena.

The MPCC president in his tweets stated that the MVA functions on principle of Common Minimum Program (CMP). The basic principles of our Indian constitution form the core of the CMP. “We once again unequivocally state here that in order to preserve social harmony, we are staunchly opposed to any renaming of any city”, tweeted Thorat.

Lashing out at the state governments Director General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR), Thorat further warned the state governments publicity department not to unilaterally on its own rename any city in the state. He further added, “Remember this that a government document is a legal document. Renaming cities is not part of the Common Minimum Program of the Maha Vikas Aghadi”.

He further went on to add “Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is a presiding deity for the Congress. Do not play politics over renaming by using his name. Let us all strive for the development of Aurangabad”.

It may be recalled that the Sena and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been locked in a war of words over the Sena move to rename the major city in Marathwada region. Meanwhile, sources disclosed that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has written to the Center to rename Aurangabad airport after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Senior Shiv Sena leader and Deputy Chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Council, Dr Neelam Gorhe reiterated that the Sena was committed to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar.
