With the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, political activities in Maharashtra have surged, with discussions heating up between Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi regarding seat allocation. While the BJP has released its initial candidate list, the seat-sharing puzzle for Maha Vikas Aghadi remains unresolved, partly due to the influence of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi.
A recent meeting between Prakash Pohre, the brother-in-law of BJP MP Sanjay Dhotre and a prominent farmer leader in Akola district, and Prakash Ambedkar, the leader of the deprived, has stirred speculation. The rendezvous took place at Ambedkar’s residence, Yashwant Bhawan in Akola, where the two engaged in closed-door discussions for about half an hour, fueling conjecture in political circles.
Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi has not yet aligned with Maha Vikas Aghadi, a fact reiterated by Ambedkar himself on several occasions. Hence, the meeting between Pohre and Ambedkar has attracted significant attention within political circles.
Addressing the purpose of the meeting, Pohre clarified that it was not politically motivated but rather centered around an invitation to a newspaper event, given his role as the editor of a local publication. Despite Pohre’s assertions, the meeting has sparked intrigue given the political dynamics at play.
Prakash Pohre’s prominence in Akola district is underscored by his familial ties to BJP figures and his role as the editor-in-chief of a prominent daily in Vidarbha. He has also carved a niche as a farmer leader, having been associated with Sharad Joshi’s farmers’ association and contesting elections from Akola Lok Sabha constituency in 1991 on the ticket of the Farmers’ Association. Pohre is the founder of the Kisan Brigade, a farmers’ organization, and has been involved in various political movements, including K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s ‘Bharat Rashtra Samiti’ in Telangana.
Meanwhile, Prakash Ambedkar’s reluctance to formally join the Mahavikas Aghadi has prompted an ultimatum from the coalition. The Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress have declared that if Ambedkar fails to announce his decision by the evening of March 19, they will proceed with the elections independently. The potential impact of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi’s alignment or separation on seat distribution underscores the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming elections, making it a critical juncture for Maharashtra’s political landscape.
