Beijing: Tensions between the United States and China have escalated sharply after the Chinese Embassy in the US issued a fiery statement declaring that Beijing is prepared for war if Washington continues its aggressive stance. The statement comes in response to President Donald Trump’s fresh tariffs on Chinese imports, citing the fentanyl crisis as justification.
“If the US truly wants to solve the fentanyl issue, the right thing to do is to consult with China by treating each other as equals. If war is what the US wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war, we’re ready to fight till the end,” the Chinese Embassy posted on X on Wednesday.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry condemned the tariff hike, calling the fentanyl crisis a flimsy excuse for economic pressure. A ministry spokesperson argued that China has taken significant steps to assist the US in tackling fentanyl-related issues, yet Washington has responded with “smears, blackmail, and economic punishment.”
“The US, not anyone else, is responsible for the fentanyl crisis. Instead of recognizing our efforts, the US has sought to shift blame onto China and is using tariff hikes as a pressure tactic. This will not solve the US’s problem and will only damage bilateral cooperation on counternarcotics,” the statement read.
