Thane: While the cases of corona are decreasing, the number of patients suffering from fungal diseases like Mucormycosis infection is rising. Due to the timely need for the treatment of this fungal disease, it has been decided to start an updated ‘Operation Theater’ at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa, Thane Municipal Corporation. Thane District Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday called an emergency meeting to review the measures to be taken to curb the disease.

Corona patients with low immunity or patients with diabetes are likely to develop mucormycosis. These patients suffer from fungus in the eyes and ears. If these patients do not get the treatment on time, the eye infection can spread to the brain and can lead to the death of the patient. In the last few days, the number of patients with the disease has been increasing in Mumbai, Thane, and MMR region, creating an atmosphere of concern. Therefore, how these patients can be saved by treating them in time, was discussed in the meeting.

The Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde instructed to start an up-to-date operation theatre at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital at Kalwa to perform surgery on such patients. Apart from that, an expert ENT surgeon is required to treat these patients. Mr Ashish Bhoomkar, an ENT Specialist in Thane, and his fellow doctors expressed their willingness to co-operate with the municipality. The meeting also decided to deploy a special team under his leadership at Kalwa Hospital. Apart from this, it was also decided to provide necessary medicines, medical equipment, and further OPD facilities to these patients.

The injections required for mucormycosis are expensive and are likely to be on the black market. Therefore, Shri. Shinde instructed Thane Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Sharma to be prepared with stock adequately on time. “Patients with diabetes who are diagnosed with the disease early, coronary artery disease, make a list of patients and contact them in time to see if they do not show symptoms of mucormycosis”, said Dr Shrikant Shinde.

“If the patients are treated on time, the patient with mucormycosis can completely get well, hence the treatment should reach the maximum number of patients on time”, said Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde. Along with Shinde, Kalyan MP Dr Shrikant Shinde, Thane Mayor Naresh Mhaske, Thane Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Sharma, ENT Specialist Dr Ashish Bhoomkar, Superintendent of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa Bhimrao Jadhav and other officials were also present.

Review of measures taken to prevent the third wave of corona

Shri. Shinde also reviewed the work of the special ward for children at the Global Hospital in Thane, noting that the third wave could hit children as the second wave of corona recedes. He also gathered information about the availability of oxygen in the district from the concerned officials.
