Mumbai: In a city that aspires to be a global financial and technological hub, commuters on the newly launched Mumbai Metro Line 3 are facing an unexpected and frustrating hurdle — a complete digital blackout. With no mobile network, disrupted UPI services, and absent internet connectivity, daily riders are being thrust into a digital void in one of Mumbai’s most advanced infrastructure projects.

Raising the alarm on social media, Akhil Chitre, youth leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), tweeted about the issue, questioning why commuters are being denied basic digital access during their daily commute. His post has since gone viral, prompting widespread public debate and political attention.

The blackout has sparked growing outrage among Mumbaikars who are demanding answers from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) and the Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd. (MMMOCL). Citizens are questioning why such a critical and basic service — digital connectivity — has not been integrated into the metro system despite being a lifeline in today’s urban life.

“What backroom deals are keeping essential services out of reach?” commuters are asking. “Why are Mumbai Metro Line 3 users being denied access to basic mobile and internet services in 2025?”

Critics argue this is not merely a matter of inconvenience — it raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and the role of private entities in public infrastructure. Many fear the absence of network access may be the result of opaque contracts, corporate monopolies, or bureaucratic compromises that prioritise profit over public interest.

“This metro was built for the people — not for private contracts, corporate control, or silent compromises,” Chitre posted, echoing the sentiments of many daily riders.

Public pressure is mounting on @MumbaiMetro3 and @MMMOCL_Official to provide clarity and immediate solutions. Citizens are demanding full disclosure of the connectivity agreements and a timeline for restoring essential mobile and internet services on the line.

Until then, the digital silence on Mumbai Metro Line 3 continues to speak volumes.
