Mumbai:: Following the successful campaign of encouraging women to get vaccinated, the Brihanmumbai Mumbai Corporation (BMC) is all set to launch a special vaccination campaign for students only. The campaign will be implemented within a week and the corporation is trying to vaccinate the maximum number of students above 18 years of age.

There are many colleges and other education institutions in Mumbai which will be covered in the special drive.

More than seven lakh students are studying in various educational institutions in Mumbai, of which three lakh students are above 18 years of age. Half of those students are likely to have been vaccinated at private vaccination centres. The percentage of vaccinations, however, is relatively low. Therefore, the corporation is striving hard to increase this percentage by implementing various special vaccination campaigns.

Recently, the BMC had started a vaccination camp only for the women who are busy as they have to work outside and at home also. Many women hesitate to go to the common vaccination camp due to long queues. Considering all the issues faced, the BMC started a special vaccination drive only for women.

Now again the BMC has come up with this new drive with a motive to encourage people for vaccination and also to reach the target of getting each and every citizen to be vaccinated. Till now 28,903 students going abroad have been vaccinated.

Although colleges in Mumbai are currently functioning online, still many students have to move out of the house for some or the other reason. In addition, as the third wave is expected in October, children and teenagers are said to be most at risk. Also, if the corporation succeeds in controlling the third wave also then the college is likely to start. Therefore, emphasis is being laid on vaccinating most of the students above 18 years of age.

This special campaign will be implemented once a week. Only students will be vaccinated on this day. Students will be able to take the first or second dose of the vaccine by visiting centres near their homes. For this, students have to show their college identity card. Students who do not have a college ID card will be able to get vaccinated by showing any ID card or fee receipt that proves their identity as a student. A senior official said that the BMC is preparing for this special campaign.

Total colleges in Mumbai 750. Number of students more than 7 lakh. Students above 18 years of age are more than 3 lakh.

“The drive for special vaccination for women received a very good response. Similarly, a special vaccination campaign for students is under consideration. We are trying hard to get each and every Mumbaikar vaccinated at the earliest,” said Suresh Kakani, Additional Commissioner, BMC.
