Thiruvananthapuram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday celebrated the BJP’s recent municipal victory in Thiruvananthapuram, calling it a landmark achievement for the party in Kerala. Addressing a rally, Modi described the win as “historic and unprecedented,” highlighting its significance for the party’s growth in a state traditionally dominated by the LDF and UDF.
Speaking to a cheering crowd, PM Modi said, “BJP’s victory in Thiruvanathapuram is not ordinary. This is historic and unprecedented. Thiruvanathapuram has laid the foundation of BJP Govt in Kerala. You gave BJP the opportunity to serve at Thiruvananthapuram Municipality. Its echo is being heard not just in Kerala but across the country. This is the victory of a party which works for good governance. This victory is for building ‘Viksit Kerala’. This victory is that of the commitment to liberate Kerala from the corruption of LDF and UDF…”
He went on to draw parallels with the BJP’s rise in Gujarat, where a single municipal victory in Ahmedabad in 1987 marked the beginning of decades of political growth. “I see a new energy, a new hope here today. Your energy gives us the confidence that now there will indeed be a change in Kerala…Before 1987, BJP was a party at the periphery in Gujarat. In 1987, for the first time, the BJP won Amdavad Municipal Corporation—just like you won in Thiruvananthapuram today. From there, the series, which began in Gujarat—people saw our work, assessed our conduct and as a result, people there have been giving us opportunities for the past several decades. It all began with one city. In Kerala, too, it has begun with one city. Now, Kerala has trusted us and connected with us,” he added.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the Thiruvananthapuram win signals a new phase for the BJP in Kerala, with a focus on good governance, transparency, and development. Party leaders and workers hailed the victory as a turning point, signaling greater political engagement and support for the BJP in a state long dominated by the Congress-led UDF and CPI(M)-led LDF.
