New Delhi: Several women MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have strongly defended Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, criticizing opposition MPs for allegedly creating chaos inside the Parliament last week. The controversy erupted during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address, when papers were reportedly thrown at the Speaker’s Chair, members entered the Well of the House, and some even surrounded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seat, forcing him to cancel his scheduled speech.
In a letter to Speaker Birla, BJP women MPs described the incident as “unfortunate and regrettable,” claiming opposition members not only entered the Well of the House but climbed tables, tore documents, and threw them toward the Speaker. They urged the Speaker to take “the strongest possible action” against those involved and praised his conduct during the nearly seven years he has served as the Presiding Officer. According to the MPs, Birla has consistently demonstrated impartiality, giving all members equal opportunity regardless of party affiliation, and striving to maintain the dignity of the Lok Sabha.
The BJP MPs noted that despite being provoked, they refrained from retaliating, following instructions from senior party leaders. They described the episode as “one of the darkest moments in the history of our parliamentary democracy.” The letter also highlighted that opposition MPs later approached the Speaker’s chamber in an aggressive manner, creating further tension.
This comes after Speaker Birla had requested Prime Minister Modi not to attend the House to prevent any potential incident, citing intelligence about opposition MPs potentially creating unrest near the Prime Minister’s seat.
The controversy follows claims from Congress women MPs that their protests were peaceful and in line with parliamentary norms. They allege that during the Motion of Thanks debate, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was denied speaking opportunities over four consecutive days, while a BJP MP reportedly made “vulgar and obscene” remarks about former Prime Ministers. Congress women MPs also criticized the Speaker for issuing a statement against them, suggesting that his independence was compromised under pressure from the ruling party.
