Mumbai: An electoral victory that was being virtually written-off for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Goa election in-charge Devendra Fadnavis, he managed to pull-off a near majority. Crediting the victory to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he stated that while the BJP is inching closer to the majority mark, the BJP nevertheless will seek the support of the Independents and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MAG) in forming the next new government.
A beaming Fadnavis remarked, “Although the BJP is inching towards absolute majority. We are leading or have won 20 seats and are in the reckoning on two seats. The credit for this victory goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the trust he has managed to create among the electorate and the way in which the ‘double engine’ government has worked in Goa. Even if we get a majority, we will take the support of the Independents and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MAG) in forming the next new government. Though the final decision will have to be taken by the MAG. Staking a claim to form a government is now a formality.”
When asked to comment on the Panaji contest result, Fadnavis said that while there was never any doubt that Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate would win, one “cannot be happy that Utpal Parrikar, son of late chief minister Manohar Parrikar (who contested as an independent) has lost. He is part of the same family.”
As per the latest tally according to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the party-wise tally in the 40 member Goa Legislative Assembly is as follows: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) 2, BJP 20, Goa Forward Party (GFP) 1, Independent’s 3, Indian National Congress (Congress) 10 (Leading in 1 seat), MAG 2 and Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) 1.
The party-wise Vote share tally was as follows: AAP 6.77%, TMC 5.21%, BJP 33.31%, GFP 1.84%, Congress 23.46%, MAG 7.60%, NCP 1.14%, NOTA 1.12%, Shiv Sena 0.18% and Others (Independents) 19.37%
