Together, the two parties command a combined strength of 118 corporators, comfortably crossing the halfway mark of 114 required to elect the Mayor. Despite this numerical advantage, consensus on key posts has remained elusive.
The Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde has maintained that the Mayor’s position should be held by a Shiv Sena representative, particularly as the party marks the centenary year of its founder, Bal Thackeray. This assertion has added a symbolic dimension to what is otherwise a strategic political negotiation, making the discussions more sensitive and complex.
The disagreement is not confined to the Mayor’s post alone. Another major point of contention is the chairmanship of the Standing Committee, a powerful body that controls financial decisions in India’s richest municipal corporation. Control over this committee is seen as crucial for shaping policy, budgetary priorities, and administrative direction for the city.
The delay in completing formal procedures, including the registration of corporators from the ruling alliance, has further intensified political speculation. In contrast, Opposition parties—Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS)—have already completed their internal processes and formal registrations, signalling readiness to play a decisive role on the floor of the House if circumstances permit.
With the Opposition accounting for a sizeable presence, the ruling alliance is keenly aware that even minor internal disagreements could complicate governance. As a result, caution has marked every step taken so far, slowing down the final announcement of leadership positions.
