Kolkata: The West Bengal BJP is mounting pressure on Governor C. V. Ananda Bose, urging his intervention over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s controversial ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ remark. The party is also demanding the revocation of the suspension of four BJP MLAs, including Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari.

On Thursday, BJP legislators, led by Adhikari, will march from the Assembly to Raj Bhavan to submit a formal deputation seeking action against Banerjee’s remarks. The party is pushing for the statement to be expunged from Assembly records, calling it an insult to the Maha Kumbh Mela.

Earlier, West Bengal BJP president and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar wrote two separate letters to the Governor, seeking his intervention. However, the Governor has not yet commented on the issue.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has come out in defense of the Chief Minister. Senior TMC leader Manas Ranjan Bhunia argued that Banerjee’s statement was taken out of context. “No one in the state government attempted to malign the Maha Kumbh. The Chief Minister only spoke about the loss of lives due to administrative mismanagement and concerns raised about water contamination in the river,” Bhunia stated.
