Fresh Complaint Revives Old Political Attack Case
A political controversy resurfaced in West Bengal on Wednesday after BJP leader Abhijit Das filed a fresh complaint seeking an investigation into a violent attack that took place in Diamond Harbour in 2018.
In his complaint submitted to local police, Das alleged that the assault was part of a planned operation aimed at targeting political opponents and has called for a detailed and time-bound probe into the incident.
The complaint brings renewed attention to Abhishek Banerjee, who is already facing scrutiny in a separate CID investigation related to alleged irregularities in party documents.
BJP Leader Alleges Planned Assault
According to Das, the incident occurred while he and several BJP workers were travelling to attend a party meeting in Diamond Harbour in December 2018.
He alleged that their vehicle was intercepted by a large group of armed individuals who blocked their route before attacking those inside the vehicle.
Das claimed he suffered serious injuries during the assault and required medical treatment. Several BJP workers accompanying him were also reportedly injured, while the vehicle was damaged during the violence.
In the complaint, he argued that the attack was not a spontaneous clash but part of a larger conspiracy intended to discourage political activity in the region.
“The targeted execution of the attack, the behavior of the armed assembly, and subsequent evidence gathered indicate a deep-rooted conspiracy,” Das stated in his petition.
Demand For Wider Investigation
The BJP leader has requested police to examine multiple aspects of the case, including CCTV footage, mobile phone records, witness statements and other evidence that could help identify those responsible.
He also alleged that despite submitting complaints and supporting documents in previous years, the alleged masterminds behind the attack had not been brought to justice.
Das has sought a comprehensive investigation into the planning, funding and execution of the alleged assault.
Separate CID Case Continues
The development comes at a time when Abhishek Banerjee remains involved in another politically sensitive matter being investigated by the CID.
The probe relates to allegations that signatures of several Trinamool Congress legislators were forged in documents connected to the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
The controversy gained momentum after some former party legislators questioned the authenticity of signatures appearing on internal party records.
High Court To Hear Matter
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court has agreed to hear a plea related to notices issued in the ongoing CID investigation.
