The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha bypolls scheduled for December 20, 2024. The elections will fill six vacant seats across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Haryana. The results are expected to be declared the same day.

The BJP’s candidates are as follows:

  • Andhra Pradesh: Ryaga Krishnaiyah
  • Odisha: Sujeet Kumar
  • Haryana: Rekha Sharma

Vacant Seats Overview

In Andhra Pradesh, three Rajya Sabha seats became vacant following the resignation of YSRCP MPs Venkataramana Rao Mopidevi, Beedha Masthan Rao Yadav, and Ryaga Krishnaiah. While their tenures extended to 2026 and 2028, their resignations have triggered elections. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, is expected to secure all three seats.

Odisha will witness an election for one seat, previously held by BJD MP Sujeet Kumar, who stepped down before completing his term until April 2, 2026. The BJP is expected to capitalize on this opportunity to claim the seat.

In West Bengal, TMC MP Jawhar Sircar’s resignation has led to a vacant seat. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is poised to retain the position.

Haryana has one seat up for grabs due to a vacancy, with BJP fielding Rekha Sharma as its candidate.

This crucial bypoll is expected to reinforce the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its position in the Rajya Sabha ahead of key legislative sessions.
