Mumbai: Maharashtra politics is set for a major moment as Sunetra Pawar, wife of late NCP leader Ajit Pawar, is preparing to step into a key leadership role in the state government. The Nationalist Congress Party has moved swiftly to ensure continuity after Ajit Pawar’s sudden death, with Sunetra Pawar agreeing to take on the responsibility of Deputy Chief Minister.
The NCP has scheduled a series of crucial meetings to formalise the decision. A legislative party meeting will be held in the morning, followed by a gathering of party MLAs at the Vidhan Bhavan later in the day. During these meetings, Sunetra Pawar is expected to be elected unanimously as the party’s legislative leader, clearing the path for her elevation to the cabinet.
Once the internal process is completed, preparations are in place for her swearing-in ceremony, which is likely to take place the same day. Senior party leaders have been closely coordinating with the state leadership to finalise the timing, while also keeping in mind customary practices observed after the death of a senior leader.
Discussions with the Chief Minister have already taken place, and there is no resistance to moving ahead with the induction. Party leaders have indicated that the final call will be taken quickly, signalling urgency to stabilise the government and avoid prolonged uncertainty.
If sworn in, Sunetra Pawar will create history by becoming the first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Her elevation is being seen as both a tribute to Ajit Pawar’s political legacy and a strategic move to keep the party united during a sensitive phase.
Ajit Pawar’s death in a tragic plane crash earlier this week had left a leadership vacuum within the NCP and raised questions about its future direction. With Sunetra Pawar stepping forward, the party appears keen to send a message of stability, continuity and resolve.
