Former Congress leader turned BJP spokesperson, Jaiveer Shergill, has stirred controversy by stating that handing over Gujarat’s Bharuch constituency to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the seat-sharing deal for the 2024 Lok Sabha election is the “revenge of the ‘Prince,'” hinting at differences between late Ahmed Patel and Rahul Gandhi. The Congress and AAP recently announced their seat-sharing deal, raising eyebrows and sparking discussions.

In Gujarat, Congress has agreed to give two seats to AAP – Bhavnagar and Bharuch. Bharuch, known as the legacy seat of the late Ahmed Patel, has caused discontent within the Patel family, with Ahmed Patel’s daughter, Mumtaz Patel, expressing disappointment in a post on social media platform ‘X.’

“Deeply apologize to our district cadre for not being able to secure the Bharuch Lok Sabha seat in alliance. I share your disappointment. Together, we will regroup to make @INCIndia stronger. We won’t let @ahmedpatel 45 years of Legacy go in vain. #bharuchkibeti,” Mumtaz Patel wrote.

Ahmed Patel’s son Faisal also expressed unhappiness among party workers regarding the seat going to AAP. The decision came as a surprise, especially after Faisal had posted a thank-you note to Rahul Gandhi on Friday night, fueling speculations that Bharuch might remain with the Congress.

Bharuch has been a stronghold for the BJP since 1989, winning the seat without exception. The AAP candidate from Bharuch for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is Chaitar Vasava, one of the five AAP leaders who won in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections. Chaitar Vasava is a tribal leader who became an MLA for the first time in 2022. Despite potential opposition from the Congress local cadre, he sees winning the seat as a tribute to Ahmed Patel.

The controversy surrounding the Bharuch seat highlights the intricacies and tensions within the political alliances as parties gear up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
