West Bengal’s high-voltage electoral contest reached a dramatic peak on Wednesday as voting progressed in the crucial Bhabanipur constituency, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari turned polling day into a fierce political showdown.
The constituency witnessed tense scenes from early morning after Mamata Banerjee accused central observers and security personnel of interfering in the election process, alleging that voters were being intimidated and her party workers were being targeted.
Bhabanipur has emerged as the most closely watched battleground of this election, with Suvendu Adhikari attempting to challenge Mamata Banerjee in what is considered her political stronghold.
Mamata Raises Alarm Over Polling Process
Breaking from her usual polling routine, Mamata Banerjee stepped out early in the morning and personally visited several booths across Bhabanipur to inspect the voting process.
During one such visit, she sat outside a polling booth in Chakraberia and publicly accused election observers of acting in favour of the BJP. She alleged that polling was not being conducted fairly and demanded immediate intervention.
According to Mamata, local party workers were being prevented from moving freely, party flags had been removed, and outside forces were creating an atmosphere of fear in the constituency.
Suvendu Hits Back, Says “No One Is Voting for Her”
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari dismissed Mamata Banerjee’s allegations and accused the ruling party of attempting to create confusion after sensing anti-incumbency.
Arriving in Bhabanipur during the voting process, Suvendu launched a sharp attack on the Chief Minister, declaring that the people of the constituency had made up their minds against her.
He alleged that Trinamool Congress supporters were trying to intimidate voters and said that despite the accusations being made, the Election Commission had ensured peaceful and fair polling arrangements.
Suvendu also expressed confidence that Mamata Banerjee would face defeat in Bhabanipur, escalating the political tension even further.
TMC and BJP Trade Charges Amid Tight Security
The war of words intensified as both parties accused each other of influencing voters.
TMC leaders alleged misuse of central agencies and observers, while BJP leaders claimed the ruling party was resorting to fear tactics on the ground.
Abhishek Banerjee, after casting his vote, also accused poll officials of overreach but maintained that the Trinamool Congress would perform better than in the last assembly election.
Meanwhile, security remained tight across the constituency, with central forces deployed in sensitive booths to maintain order.
Bhabanipur Becomes Symbolic Fight for Bengal Power
The Bhabanipur contest has taken on symbolic importance in Bengal politics. In the last election, Mamata Banerjee had taken on Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram and lost narrowly.
This time, the BJP leader has shifted the battleground to Mamata’s own stronghold, turning Bhabanipur into a prestige fight between the two biggest faces of Bengal politics.
