The electoral battleground in Maharashtra’s heartland is ablaze as campaigning for the first phase of polling on April 19 draws to a close. Despite the BJP’s dominance, the Shiv Sena and the NCP (SP) combine, led by Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar respectively, have thrown their weight behind the Congress in select constituencies. Their presence in east Vidarbha underscores the importance of regional alliances in shaping the political landscape.
Notably, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s bid for a third term from Nagpur symbolizes the BJP’s stronghold in the region. His opponent, Congress nominee Vikas Thakre, leverages his track record as a mayor and legislator to challenge Gadkari’s supremacy.
