Dhaka: In a dramatic development with far-reaching implications, the Bangladesh government has requested Interpol to issue a red notice against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 11 others in connection with an alleged conspiracy to overthrow the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, according to reports in local media.

The request was reportedly submitted by the Bangladesh Police Headquarters as part of an ongoing investigation into serious charges including inciting civil war and plotting to destabilize the transitional administration.

Quoting Assistant Inspector General (Media) Enamul Haque Sagor, The Dhaka Tribune reported, “These applications are filed in connection with allegations that emerge during investigations or through ongoing case proceedings.”

If approved, the red notice would authorize global law enforcement agencies to locate and provisionally detain the accused individuals, paving the way for possible extradition or other legal proceedings under international law.

Interpol’s red notice mechanism is not an arrest warrant but is often treated as a serious international alert, triggering detention and legal action in cooperating countries.

This move comes at a time of heightened political tension in Bangladesh, where allegations of conspiracy and counter-conspiracy have dominated the national narrative. While government authorities have not released detailed evidence, the nature of the charges indicates an intensifying crackdown on high-profile political figures.

The request for international intervention underscores the gravity with which Bangladeshi authorities view the alleged attempt to subvert the interim government headed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
