Union Minister of Culture, Tourism and DONER G Kishan Reddy has observed that the very survival of the country, its unity and integrity, is highly dependent on heritage and culture. The Minister was inaugurating a public meeting at Kalady, the birthplace of Shankaracharya in Kerala. The function was part of the nationwide programme organised to coincide with the unveiling of the statue of Shankaracharya and the inauguration of the rebuilt samadhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Kedarnath this morning.
Noting that Adi Shankaracharya was the country’s earliest social reformer who fought against caste discrimination, the Minister said that through discussions and deliberations, he led to the unifying philosophy of Advaita Vedanta and brought together different preachers of Hinduism under one fold.
He said the Ayodhya Temple which is expected to be completed by 2023, will be the biggest pilgrim centre in the world. The temple is expected to attract 10 crore pilgrims a year.
Kishen Reddy said the union government is working on making places of pilgrimage in the country more accessible to the pilgrims. The Minister is scheduled to participate in a cultural programme organised by the Ministry of Culture in Kalady later this evening.
