Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a renewed push for eviction drives in the state, particularly in the Uriamghat area under the Sarupathar constituency and the Golaghat constituency. The move comes amid reports of suspected illegal settlements.
Speaking to the media, CM Sarma said, “We have carried out eviction drives. After the eviction, we found that some people came from the Goalpara district. It is possible that some people came from Manipur, West Bengal, or had recently arrived from Bangladesh.” He further revealed that just a day prior, authorities had apprehended 16 individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals.
Referring to future action, the Chief Minister stated, “We will carry out an eviction drive in Uriamghat under the Sarupathar constituency and the Golaghat constituency. But it will take 4-5 months.”
