Assam Flood Fury: 5 Dead in Landslides, Red Alert in 18 Districts, CM Sarma Calls It ‘Abnormal Situation’

Guwahati: Assam reels under nature’s fury as at least five people lost their lives in landslides in Kamrup (Metro) district in the last 24 hours, triggered by relentless rains lashing the region. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed that three districts—Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), and Cachar—have been severely impacted, affecting over 10,150 people across five revenue circles.

With urban flooding reported in various parts of the state, the situation in Guwahati has turned alarming. Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika visited severely waterlogged areas in the city on Friday and told reporters, “Multiple agencies are on the ground providing relief and rescue. We are monitoring the situation closely.”

Amidst the crisis, Assam Police personnel continue to serve with unmatched commitment, braving the relentless downpour. Their efforts have been applauded statewide for ensuring timely evacuations and assistance.

Water From Arunachal Adds to Woes
Floodwaters from Arunachal Pradesh, which has also seen intense rainfall, have inundated large parts of Lakhimpur district, worsening the situation. Officials confirmed rescue operations are ongoing, with many residents evacuated to safer zones.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a red alert for several districts including Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Darrang, and Udalguri. In total, 18 districts are now on high alert.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Raises Alarm
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, acknowledging the growing crisis, stated: “A red alert has been sounded in 18 districts. Assam is facing an abnormal situation due to massive cloud cover and incessant rain.”
