Keeping in line with the protocol and traditions of the state legislature, former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday evening was formally appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the 14th Legislative Assembly. It is rather ironical that Devendra Fadnavis who as the legislature party leader of the single largest party the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 105 MLAs, will be pitted against a triangular ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi of Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena.
The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi that comprises of three main parties – the Congress (44 MLAs), NCP 54 MLAs and Sena 56 MLAs will be arrayed against Fadnavis who leads a single monolith block of 105 BJP MLAs.
As per the traditions of the state legislature, before Sena president Uddhav Thackeray is sworn-in as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra on November 28 at Shivaji Park, Dadar in the evening, the legislative assembly needs to have its leader of opposition appointed. As matter of protocol the leader of opposition in the lower house is invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony, official functions and has statutory powers. However, there will not be any leader of opposition from the legislative council as its immediate past incumbent, NCPs Dhananjay Munde has been elected to the lower house from the Parli assembly constituency.
Fadnavis to his credit was the first non-Congress, chief minister of Maharashtra who lasted his full five year term. Fadnavis had become the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra on October 31, 2014 and tendered his resignation on November 12, 2019. He was sworn-in for a second short-lived term of just three days between November 23 to November 26, 2019.
Born on July 22, 1970, 49 year old Devendra Fadnavis is now into his fifth term as MLA. Post Graduate in Business Management and Diploma in DSE from German Foundation for International Development, Berlin. He began his political career with the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in 1989. He was the second youngest mayor in the country. Fadnavis served as the mayor of Nagpur Municipal Corporation between 1997-2001.
Fadnavis entered the Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1999. He has been known as a well articulate and studied politician. He was the general secretary of Maharashtra BJP in 2010. Fadnavis was appointed as the Maharashtra BJP president in 2013 just months before the assembly elections.
