New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Friday strongly condemned the allegations against climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, taking a sharp jibe at the Central government for allegedly using its “entire machinery” to harass a person committed to the nation’s progress.
In a post on social media platform X, Kejriwal wrote: “Read about Sonam Wangchuk. The person who thinks about the country, thinks about education, makes new inventions, is being harassed by the entire machinery of the central government today under extremely cheap politics. It feels extremely sad—how the reins of the country are in the hands of such people. How will such a country progress?”
The comments come in the wake of unrest in Leh, Ladakh, following a 14-day hunger strike by Wangchuk, who has peacefully protested for the region’s demands over the past five years, including undertaking a notable barefoot march from Leh to Delhi.
The protests stem from long-standing calls for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, a demand echoed by people across Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
Authorities in Leh have imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, including a ban on assemblies of five or more people and prohibitions on processions, rallies, or marches without prior written approval.
The Government of India has reportedly been engaging with the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) on these issues through formal channels such as the High-Powered Committee (HPC) and the Sub-committee, as well as multiple informal meetings. The next HPC meeting is scheduled for 6th October, with additional discussions planned for 25th and 26th September with Ladakh leaders.
