“Tail Destroyed, Officers Survive”: Indian Army Cheetah Helicopter Crashes Near Leh, All 3 Escape in High-Altitude Miracle

Army Helicopter Goes Down in Ladakh’s Tangste Sector

A major tragedy was narrowly avoided after an Indian Army Cheetah helicopter crashed in the high-altitude Tangste region near Leh in Ladakh, with all three officers onboard surviving despite the aircraft suffering severe damage.

According to defence officials, the crash occurred in a remote mountainous area known for extreme weather and difficult flying conditions. The incident reportedly took place earlier this week, though details emerged publicly only later.

Images from the crash site circulating online show the helicopter’s tail section completely wrecked, while the officers are seen sitting beside the damaged aircraft after the accident.

Senior Army Officers Among Those Onboard

Officials said the helicopter was being operated by a lieutenant colonel and a major of the Indian Army. A senior officer serving as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 3rd Infantry Division was also travelling in the aircraft at the time of the crash.

Despite the violent impact and the dangerous terrain, all three officers escaped with only minor injuries, something Army sources described as extremely fortunate given the location and condition of the helicopter after the accident.

Emergency rescue and evacuation efforts were launched immediately after the crash to bring the officers to safety.

Investigation Ordered Into Crash

Army authorities have initiated a detailed investigation to determine what caused the helicopter to go down in the sensitive high-altitude zone. Technical failure, terrain challenges and weather conditions are expected to be examined as part of the probe.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the ageing Cheetah and Chetak helicopter fleet used extensively by the armed forces in border and glacier sectors.

Concerns Rise Over Ageing Helicopter Fleet

The Cheetah helicopters continue to play a critical role in transporting troops, supplies and senior officers to remote forward locations in regions such as Ladakh and the Siachen Glacier.

However, defence experts and former military officials have repeatedly raised concerns over the ageing fleet after multiple crashes over the years. Reports suggest more than 15 Cheetah and Chetak helicopters have crashed in the last decade, leading to several fatalities.

Despite recurring incidents, the helicopters remain operational because of their ability to function in some of the world’s toughest high-altitude conditions where larger aircraft often cannot operate.
