Chennai: Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Chennai on Thursday evening for a high-stakes political visit aimed at reviving the BJP’s alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. According to India Today sources, the visit could culminate in both the finalisation of the alliance and the announcement of a new BJP state president for Tamil Nadu.

The talks, reportedly being held behind closed doors, are said to be critical in shaping the BJP’s southern strategy. Shah is expected to meet senior AIADMK leaders and state BJP officials to hammer out the terms of the potential partnership. Insiders reveal that the discussions and any leadership changes in the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit are likely to be wrapped up by April 12.

The move is being seen as a direct challenge to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which continues to maintain a stronghold over the state. The BJP is aiming to consolidate anti-DMK votes and create a viable alternative by renewing ties with the AIADMK—a party it had allied with during the 2019 general elections.

While no official statement has been issued yet, speculation is rife that the BJP may replace the current state unit chief to boost its appeal among local voters and reposition itself in the regional political landscape.
