Former Mumbai Congress Chief Sanjay Nirupam has issued a fervent appeal to the party leadership, urging them to reconsider their alliance with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT). His call for action comes shortly after Shiv Sena unveiled its much-anticipated list of 17 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections in Maharashtra.

Expressing his concerns to the media on Wednesday, Nirupam emphasized the potential risks associated with the alliance with Shiv Sena, cautioning that it could lead to significant losses for the Congress party. He urged the attention of Congress leadership to intervene in the matter and consider ending the alliance to safeguard the party’s interests. Nirupam warned that persisting with the alliance may ultimately prove self-destructive for Congress.

Shiv Sena’s candidate announcement saw Anil Desai being fielded from the South Central seat, while sitting MP Arvind Sawant secured the ticket for the South Mumbai seat. Notably, Amol Kirtikar, son of former MP Gajanan Kirtikar, was nominated for the North West constituency, following his father’s allegiance to the Shiv Sena after the party split.

Nirupam’s dissatisfaction with the party leadership has been evident, particularly amidst speculations that Shiv Sena is poised to dominate the allocation of Mumbai seats within the Maha Vikas Aghadi Alliance. He has voiced concerns that such a scenario would deal a moral blow to the party’s Mumbai cadre.

This isn’t the first instance of Nirupam’s dissent within the party ranks. He recently questioned Congress’ support for Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. Nirupam highlighted the ethical implications of backing a leader accused of corruption, questioning the party’s moral stance.

His recent statements and activities, including retweeting messages hinting at his possible departure from Congress, have fueled speculation about his political future. Observers suggest that feeling neglected within the party, Nirupam may explore options outside Congress, with speculations rife about a potential move to the BJP.
