In a shocking revelation, Chandan Verma, the main accused in the brutal killings of a teacher, his wife, and their two young daughters in Amethi, has claimed that his violent actions were a result of a relationship gone awry. Authorities report that Verma had been involved with Poonam, the mother of the slain children, for approximately a year and a half before the relationship soured, prompting him to commit the heinous act.
Verma was arrested on Friday afternoon at a toll plaza near Noida while allegedly attempting to flee to Delhi. Following his arrest, police began recovering the motorcycle and pistol used in the murders. In a startling turn of events, as police were handling the recovery, Verma managed to snatch a police officer’s gun and fired at him. Fortunately, the officer escaped unharmed, but Verma was shot in the leg by another policeman during the chaotic incident.
The tragic events unfolded on Thursday, when Sunil Kumar, his wife Poonam, and their two daughters—aged just one and six—were found shot dead in their home in Bhavani Nagar. The investigation revealed that Poonam had previously filed a police complaint against Verma, accusing him of threatening her on multiple occasions and indicating that he would be responsible if anything happened to her or her family. She also accused him of sexual harassment.
Amethi Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar Singh disclosed in a press conference that Verma had confessed to the police about the nature of his relationship with Poonam. “He said there were some problems in the relationship recently, which kept him tense. This is why he shot her and her family,” Singh explained. Verma allegedly fired ten bullets during the attack, leading to the deaths of the entire family. After the murders, he attempted to take his own life but missed, ultimately fleeing the scene instead.
The police also indicated that all bullets found at the crime scene were fired from a single weapon, suggesting Verma acted alone in this horrific act. Notably, Verma had expressed violent intentions prior to the murders. On September 12, he updated his WhatsApp status with a chilling message: “5 people are going to die, I will show you soon.”
Following the altercation with police, Verma was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The Uttar Pradesh Police confirmed that he was taken back to Amethi on Saturday to help locate the firearm and motorcycle used in the crime. During this process, he attempted to kill a policeman, prompting the second officer’s response that resulted in Verma being shot in the leg.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events leading to this devastating incident. Poonam’s initial complaint to the police, which detailed the harassment and violence she faced from Verma, raises critical questions about how such serious allegations were handled before this tragedy occurred. The Amethi community is left grappling with the aftermath of this tragedy as they mourn the loss of a family in a brutal crime that has sent shockwaves across the region.
