Concerns have emerged following the detection of bird flu among chickens at the Regional Egg Hatchery Center in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The outbreak, which led to a significant number of chicken deaths on March 2, has prompted swift action to contain the spread of the disease.

Authorities have initiated measures to safeguard public health, including the scientific culling of all poultry flocks within a one-kilometer radius of the affected hatchery center. Dr. Kanchan Wanere, Deputy Director of Health, has urged residents in other areas to consume properly cooked chicken meat and eggs as a precautionary measure.

Samples from the infected chickens were sent to laboratories in Pune and Bhopal for testing, confirming the presence of avian influenza. Consequently, orders have been issued to cull and destroy approximately eight and a half thousand chickens at the hatchery center.

Under the Animal Infections and Prevention and Control Act 2009 and the Bird Flu Control Action Plan, the area within a one-kilometer radius of the Nagpur Regional Hatchery Center has been declared an affected area. District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar emphasized the importance of implementing preventive measures to contain the spread of the disease.

Dr. Vanere reiterated that while chickens in other parts of the state remain unaffected, it is crucial to ensure thorough cooking of chicken meat and eggs to mitigate the risk of contracting bird flu. Addressing concerns and rumors circulating about poultry consumption, Dr. Vanere urged the public not to believe unfounded claims and emphasized the importance of adhering to proper cooking practices.

In areas where cases of avian influenza are identified, affected individuals will be isolated, and their throat samples will be tested for further examination. As efforts continue to contain the outbreak, authorities remain vigilant in monitoring and responding to any developments to safeguard public health and mitigate the spread of bird flu.
